AIG

AIG Identification Process

Identification for the Academically/Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Program begins in the spring of second grade. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is administered in May to all second grade scholars.

Scholars who score in the 97th percentile or above qualify for AIG and begin services in third grade. Scholars with CogAT scores of 90% - 96%  will be administered the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) Reading and/or Math subtest. A minimum of 95% on the either subtest, in conjunction with the CogAT, will qualify him/her for AIG services.

Students new to Socrates Academy may be tested based on academic records from their previous grade or school.

AIG Services

Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are pulled out twice a week for direct instruction with the AIG teacher. Additionally, teachers at the Academy are trained to use diverse instructional practices to address the learning needs of exceptional students.

Each year qualifying scholars at Socrates Academy have the opportunity to participate with other students from across NC in two programs:

  1. The Duke Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) is a gifted education program based at Duke University. Its purpose is to identify gifted children and provide them, and their parents the resources for them to reach their full educational potential. Students are identified as part of the 4th-6th Grade Talent Search and/or as part of the 7th Grade Talent Search.

  2. The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship. NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
