Hello Socrates Families,

My name is Julie Merchant, (Miss Julie) and I am new to Socrates Academy. Currently a graduate student at UNC Charlotte, I am completing my Masters degree in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling. I previously graduated Magna Cum Laude from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences, and a minor in Psychology. Having been an athlete in my adolescence, I gravitated naturally into recreation management as my first career. At the same time I was very involved in youth ministry and eventually found my way to Boys Town, where I earned my Family Teaching certificate.

Prior to entering my Graduate studies at UNC Charlotte, I spent 15 years working in the schools as a learning specialist, substitute teacher, athletic coach and coordinating mentoring programs to support student achievement.

While working as an intern at Socrates Academy, I am under direct supervision of School Psychologist Tonya Murray. I look forward to providing one-to-one and/or group counseling or consultation services, as well as academic advising and crisis intervention to all Socrates students. I strive to meet each individual where they are, honoring and encouraging diversity in personal awareness as well as individualized modes of intervention.   I will always honor the confidential rights, independence and autonomy of each student who enters my office, while encouraging empowerment and self-actualization through personal growth, awareness, communication and social justice. I am happy to meet on an individual basis as well as provide forums, workshops and opportunities for creative expression that meet the needs of the Socrates students.

Communication with parents and teachers is an important link to the healthy development of all students, therefore your input regarding your student is invaluable to me. I also look forward to working with parents through parent workshops and focus groups to enhance communication and foster a supportive parenting environment for the families of Socrates Academy.

Warm Regards,

Julie Merchant
