Dear Socrates Academy Family,

We are proud to share that Socrates Academy has achieved a School Performance Grade of ‘A’ as released by the State Board of Education today. We are so proud of our entire school family and share this achievement with all students, staff, and parents. Today’s announcement is the result of a lot of hard work and we will continue putting our best effort into providing our scholars a high quality education.

The annual North Carolina School Report Card offers ways for Socrates Academy’s stakeholders to learn more about our charter school. The school report card contains information about student performance, class size, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, and teacher quality in our school. This information can be used to compare Socrates Academy to other schools across our state. To access our report card, please visit www.ncpublicschools.org/src.

This year, we are especially proud of our progress in literacy education. With funds raised through the 2014 Read A Thon, we were able to purchase books for classroom libraries, create a teacher bookroom of leveled guided reading materials, and grow our library collections in elementary and middle school. Teachers are continuing to develop the Readers and Writers Workshop model to better address the needs of each individual. The middle school team has worked to expand opportunities for students to explore interests and develop leadership qualities. In addition to Student Council and National Junior Honors Society, middle school students were invited to participate in our first Battle of the Books program, develop a student newspaper, and have input on our yearbook. Across our K—8 school, teachers are sharing their needs for instructional materials and professional development so they can best support every child. I continue to be grateful for the caring and dedicated people who make up our Socrates family. They are committed to creating a safe and nurturing environment for all students.

While we have many successes to celebrate, there are areas for improvement that we continue to address. During this school year, the Board of Directors and Leadership Team have worked to develop and approve a new five-year strategic plan. This will help us to set focused goals and create a School Improvement Plan that will make reaching these goals a reality. Working together, I am confident that our strategic plan will guide the school in the right direction and further our vision of helping each student leave 8th grade prepared for high school and globally competitive for careers, college, and citizenship.

Socrates Academy strives to make our school the best it can be as measured by state, national, and international measures. Parent support is a critical element of our success and I welcome you to talk with your child’s teacher about how to be more involved in our quest for excellence. When parents partner with teachers in their child’s education in positive ways, we can help each learner achieve their greatest potential.

I encourage you to review the school report card and contact the Leadership Team with any questions you might have. Thank you for your continued support of Socrates Academy!

Kristen N. Priganc
