March 6, 2015

Dear Diary,

WOW! You should see this place during Read A Thon! I can’t wait to show all of the pictures to my family back in Owl Canyon, Colorado. They would not believe the amazing things that are happening here to keep the students excited about this fundraiser!

On Monday, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Lots of teachers dressed up as book characters and I saw more than one Cat in the Hat! Some of the grade levels even had themed costumes. 5th grade dressed as the 3 Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf and 4th grade dressed as Goldilocks and the 3 bears. It was so great to see the teachers get into it!

On Tuesday, Effie Trinket and Caesar Flickerman visited the middle school and hosted the 2nd annual Socrates Hunger Games. (It was actually Miss Priganc and Mr. Bogar, but you could hardly recognize them!) There was a reaping in the morning and tributes competed all day to earn the top spot. Students had to answer questions about Read A Thon, show off their Greek skills, and participate in “feats of strength.” It was a really fun day and the winning tribute, Ryan King, won a $50 sponsorship for Read A Thon. I hope that the middle school students can push Read A Thon this year. They have the potential to be great leaders and leave the school a little better than when they started.

On Wednesday, we had a teacher competition during lunch. You should have seen the teachers trying to scoop cotton balls over their heads and into a coffee filter bowl while blindfolded. I laughed so hard! Our teachers really will do anything to keep our students motivated.

Thursday was kind of calm which was nice because it has been so active around campus. I visited some classrooms and saw the progress being made on the door decoration competition. I cannot believe how creative our staff and students can be. Judging will be next week, but everyone is off to a great start!

On Friday, Socrates had a mouse problem. Don’t worry…it was the kind of mice that want cookies and milk! To thank all of the parents for their support of Read A Thon, several staff members dressed up like mice (from “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie”) and handed out cookies during afternoon carline. The parents seemed to appreciate the small treat.

I need to get some rest this weekend because next week is going to be very busy. Read A Thon continues and there are more competitions and prizes to be won. I heard something about a pie-in-the face event and can’t wait to see what that looks like. We will also be getting ready for the Socrates March Madness basketball tournament on Saturday the 14th. I am sure that will prove to be exciting!
