Kindergarten Celebrates our U.S. Armed Forces

In honor of Veteran's Day Mrs. Purcell's and Mrs. Jones' kindergarten classes wrote letters to active duty military personnel and created a flag banner of the American flag using their handprints.  This package was sent to Lieutenant Colonel Lisa Coleman, an Army Military Police Officer, currently serving in Kuwait. The children were thrilled to receive an email this week from Lisa that included photos of her and another soldier with their banner and photo.  Lt. Col. Coleman has served in the Army for 23 years and this is her 4th deployment to the Middle East.  She said, "Each time I'm away from home, it is letters, cards, and pictures from children just like you that make things better.  If I'm having a bad day or I really miss home, I can look at your handwritten cards or the pictures you drew, and they will make me smile."  She also spoke about being away from home at the holidays, "I really appreciate you thinking about all the men and women away from home, especially at the holidays.  We all have families we care about , but sometimes we have to leave home in order to do our jobs.  The support we get from everyone means so much to all of us."  The best part for the children was to hear that their hand printed banner is now hanging in an Army facility in Arifjan, Kuwait and helps to brighten the day of all the soldiers and staff in the facility.  What a wonderful way to remember our troops at the holidays!  #SocratesProud

Subject: Mail Arrived - Thank You!!
(UNCLASSIFIED)

CLASSIFICATION: UNCLASSIFIED

Hello Cathy!

Thank you so much for sending the flag poster and the letters from your Kindergarten
Class (and Mrs. Jones' class too)!  I've attached some pictures that you
can hopefully share with the class this week.  I also wanted to send a
note to them.  Can you please read this to them?

Dear Mrs. Purcell's and Mrs. Jones' Kindergarten Class,

Hello.  My name is Lisa and I received your wonderful package here in
Kuwait where I'm currently working.  Thank you very much for the flag
poster and cards you sent us.  I could tell you put in a great deal of
time and effort to make the flag with all of your hand prints, the notes you
wrote, and the pictures you colored.  I've read through them all and
looked at the pictures you drew.  I wanted to take some time and send you
an e-mail and some pictures to say thank you.

I am in the Army and I am a Military Police Officer.  My job here in
Kuwait is the Officer in Charge of the Forensic Lab (a science crime
lab).  There are many different scientists here that are also deployed
away from home so that we can catch the bad guys who are trying to hurt other people.
There are also other Soldiers that I work with, and shared with them your
letters and showed them the flag poster you sent to us.

I have been in the Army for 23 years, and this is the fourth time I've been to
the Middle East.  I've been to Kuwait before, as well as Iraq and
Afghanistan.  Each time I'm away from home, it is letters, cards and
pictures from children just like you that make things better.  If I'm
having a bad day or I really miss home, I can look at your handwritten cards or
the pictures you drew, and they will make me smile.

Please make sure you tell your teacher, Ms. Cathy Purcell, a special thank you
for me since I can't be there to do it myself.  I really appreciate you
thinking about all of the men and women away from home, especially at the
holidays.  We all have families we love a care about, but sometimes, we
have to leave home in order to do our jobs.  The support we get from
everyone means so much to all of us.

The first picture is with me (Lieutenant Colonel Lisa Coleman) and Sergeant
First Class Eric Andersen after I opened the box.  The second picture is
your beautiful poster and your class picture hanging in the warehouse where the
lab is located.  I hung the poster in the lab where everyone will walk by
it every day and see it.  The third picture is of me by the flag and
picture.  I hope you enjoy seeing your flag poster now hanging in Arifjan,
Kuwait.  It will remind us each day when we see it of America, home, and
wonderful children like each of you who are thinking about us and supporting
us.

I wish all of you a Merry Christmas (Happy Holidays if you have to say
that).  Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to make this
wonderful gift for us.

Take care and be good,

Lisa
