As part of a school-wide initiative, Socrates Academy has been implementing a new Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports model. PBIS was established nationally to build the behavioral and discipline systems needed for successful learning and social development of students. Our school-wide system includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments. A system of recognition helps motivate students to try their best and to encourage others as well.

One important piece of PBIS is to create a set of school rules that are well known to all affiliated with our school. The PBIS team continues using the motto SOCRATES PROUD – Respect and Responsibility - to summarize the motivation for those rules. For 2015-2016 our focus has been behavior in common areas. A rubric was created to specify expected behavior in each area around the school. PBIS tickets (K-5) and SWAG Passes (6-8) are given intermittently to students and classes that are exhibiting the Socrates Proud expectations. Weekly recognitions highlight random students and classes as added incentives. Besides encouraging students to practice positive behavior, the system allows us to collect data to see how we are progressing toward making Socrates Academy a great place for learning and growing.

The rubrics that we are using for K-8 grades are here >>
